I heard Fashion Nova was the place to go for great looking budget dresses so I had to give it a try. This post is in no way sponsored by Fashion Nova. I just really needed a dress for my friend’s wedding, along with a number of other weddings this season. I bought a bunch of short formal dresses and tried them out. Each of these dresses were roughly $30-$50 USD, which is a steal for a formal dress.
The Love Affair Mini
This dress was not nearly as low cut as it seemed on the model. It looked quite modest, but the back of the dress is entirely open. I loved that this dress was stretchy, which made it comfortable. There’s a gold zipper on the back of the dress that I thought was fashionable. While it looks nice, the zipper wasn’t the greatest quality and is a bit difficult to zip, but nothing frustrating. This was the dress that I picked to wear to my friend’s wedding! 10/10 Excellent value.
Maise Tulle Dress
Looking at the comparison photo, you can tell the dress that I have on (right) has a bit of a scrunchy bottom, whereas the dress on the left looks more flowy and soft. The dress that I am wearing is clearly a different dress than what the model has on. This is online shopping for you though. I am still happy with this dress. It fits well, although it is not stretchy. It has a low cut, but I don’t feel like there is a high probability of a nip slip. The back of this dress is also open with a criss-cross strap. 9/10.
Loki Mini Dress in Sage
This dress is sexy, but unfortunately, it doesn’t suit my body figure. I look like a frumpy ass lump in this dress. All the dresses that I purchased were size S, but I could probably have gone a size up here. This dress is tight and hugs every curve. The dress isn’t thick enough to wear without a bra, but finding a bra for this dress is not easy. I also hate this colour on me, so I returned it. I could see it working in a black. 3/10
Just a Kiss High Low in Blush
Honestly, this dress looks a lot better in the photo than it feels. It’s made of this very weird foamy polyester material. Again, when looking at the dress that I am wearing compared to the model’s dress, I’m fairly certain that these two dresses are not the same. There is a bow tie on the back of this dress also. I think while the design is nice, the weird foamy polyester material made it feel cheap. 2/10
Through my Window Mesh
This dress straight-up did not fit. It also was not stretchy at all. The style is nice, and so is the colour. It may have worked it was a size up perhaps, but it would still be uncomfortable. The straps are actually adjustable, but to adjust it, I’d have to take this entire dress off. This dress is made of a material similar to a cheap handkerchief. 3/10
It was a really fun experience trying on these dresses. It’s definitely hit or miss, but I’d have to say that the misses weren’t all that bad. It wasn’t outlandishly bad or poor in quality, it just didn’t look good on me or fit and that’s just an inherent problem with online shopping. The return policy for Fashion Nova, however, isn’t great. It is store credit only, and you have to pay for the shipping back yourself, at least in Canada (not sure if it’s different if you live in the US). Note: These try-ons that I do is totally informal and I don’t edit the photos at all. Just trying to show it as it is.
